چکیده

The latest wearable technologies demand more intuitive and sophisticated interfaces for communication, sensing, and feedback closer to the body. Evidently, such interfaces require flexibility and conformity without losing their functionality even on rigid surfaces. Although there have been various research efforts in creating tactile feedback to improve various haptic interfaces and master–slave manipulators, we are yet to see a comprehensive device that can both supply vibratory actuation and tactile sensing. This paper describes a soft pneumatic actuator (SPA)-based skin prototype that allows bidirectional tactile information transfer to facilitate simpler and responsive wearable interface. We describe the design and fabrication of a 1.4mm-thick vibratory SPA – skin that is integrated with piezoelectric sensors. We examine in detail the mechanical performance compared to the SPA model and the sensitivity of the sensors for the application in vibrotactile feedback. Experimental findings show that this ultra-thin SPA and the unique integration process of the discrete lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-based piezoelectric sensors achieve high resolution of soft contact sensing as well as accurate control on vibrotactile feedback by closing the control loop.

Buckling Analysis of FG Plate with Smart Sensor/Actuator

In this paper, the active buckling control of smart functionally graded (FG) plates using piezoelectric sensor/actuator patches is studied. A simply supported FG rectangular plate which is bonded with piezoelectric rectangular patches on the top and/or the bottom surface(s) as actuators/sensors is considered. When a constant electric charge is imposed, the governing differential equations of mo...

Development of X-Y Servo Pneumatic-Piezoelectric Hybrid Actuators for Position Control with High Response, Large Stroke and Nanometer Accuracy

This study aims to develop a X-Y dual-axial intelligent servo pneumatic-piezoelectric hybrid actuator for position control with high response, large stroke (250 mm, 200 mm) and nanometer accuracy (20 nm). In each axis, the rodless pneumatic actuator serves to position in coarse stroke and the piezoelectric actuator compensates in fine stroke. Thus, the overall control systems of the single axis...

Encapsulation of Piezoelectric Transducers for Sensory Augmentation and Substitution with Wearable Haptic Devices

The integration of polymeric actuators in haptic displays is widespread nowadays, especially in virtual reality and rehabilitation applications. However, we are still far from optimizing the transducer ability in conveying sensory information. Here, we present a vibrotactile actuator characterized by a piezoelectric disk embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) shell. An original encapsulation...

Self-Sensing Pneumatic Artificial Muscles for Feedback Control using the Inductance of “Smart Braids”

Measuring and controlling Pneumatic Artificial Muscles (PAMs) without instrumented, mechanical structures can be challenging. This is the case, for example, when the actuators are used in soft, human exosuits [5]. “Smart Braids” measure the length of PAMs through the inductance of a conductive braid. The inductance increases linearly with the contraction of the actuator. We have modeled and tes...
